We finally had a date night last summer—the first time in years. This deal is making me want to repeat it. The dinner part, at least! We like going to local restaurants, and finding coupons online makes it so much more affordable. We enjoyed a wonderful meal at Battery in Johnson City for $25 by going through an online coupon site. I loved going to this beautiful restaurant. It’s located in the old train station (where the Farmer’s Market is) and makes you feel as though you’re stepping into a Charleston restaurant. I got the seared scallops with scalloped potatoes and an appetizer of lobster fritters. OH MY STARS, it was a meal for the gods!! I didn’t take pictures because, you know, we were on a date. The next time we visit I’ll be sure to share it with you!
Let’s talk about another local restaurant. It’s not as fancy as The Battery but it’s a great place for some delicious onion rings. Sound good? Last week we visited Two Dads Cafe & Catering in downtown Kingsport.
I snagged a $10 gift certificate on Restaurant.com and thought this would be a perfect opportunity to try a new local place. We arrived on Dec. 27 and were the only customers in the place. It’s a very small building — only 3 tables fit lengthwise across the front area. When you go, prepare to be up close and personal with the staff at Two Dads. It was a little uncomfortable at first but since we have two rowdy kids we were glad that we weren’t disturbing any other patrons. Since they have to-go orders, you can just stop by after work and pick up dinner. They even make it easy by allowing you to TEXT in your order. How simple is that?!
The food at Two Dads is made to order. They were recovering from Christmas like the rest of us, so they didn’t have the biscuits my daughter was hoping for. My son kept looking for pancakes on the menu but came up disappointed. Still, we all found something to order. It took only a few minutes for them to serve up our burger, fries, and other goodies. I ordered the BLT with a side of onion rings. Doesn’t it look tasty?
Our total bill for our family of 4 (including drinks) was around $21. Since I had the $10 gift certificate, we paid only $11. Pretty good bargain, wouldn’t you say? Next time we might try something a bit more adventurous. Notice the little dry-erase board in the picture above? Two Dads offers lots of delicious sauces for burgers. Their schedule is a little crazy so be sure to check their website for hours of service. Bring a friend and enjoy some heart-healthy onion rings!!

Oh I wish we had a TWO Dad’s in our area. They sound amazing. I love how the best places to eat in town are not very widely known or big chains. we have a few places like that in our area too.

I’ve actually heard of The Battery from a relative, I really want to stop in the next time I am visiting. The food looks absolutely amazing (not quite New Years friendly, but we’ll overlook that).

Deals are amazing! Love it when you also get great food, too. I’m glad there are so many different types of eating. Sometimes you feel more like elegant and fancy scallops while others you just want some good fried, “homey” cooking.
