This year, my son discovered the Who Was? series on Netflix.  Some of my former students made me aware of the book series, too, so I showed the books to my son. He could not wait to get his hands on them!  This is a boy who usually has to be forced to read for 20 minutes each day, so I was more than happy to provide him with his own copies.

These are ideal for independent readers around ages 8-10, but could also be appropriate for younger students as well as struggling readers in middle school.  The text is clean and easy to follow.  I like the sprinkling of related illustrations that break up the page.  Additionally, sneaky school stuff like maps are thrown in for extra learning potential!

Sometimes, you’ll find inset pages with relevant background information.  My son is particularly interested in history, so he loves to find out little factoids about topics like WWI.

Many Who Was? titles were priced less than $5 on Amazon and at the Book Depository.  We also found a big assortment at our local used bookstore priced around $3.  We collected quite a stash, but my son is already asking for more.  He wants all of the books for individuals featured in season one of TV show.  The Netflix episodes truly inspired him to learn more about history. I love it when TV works in my favor!    These books deserve more attention because they’re so kid-friendly, making learning fun and meaningful!

Check out the Who Was series and learn something new!

He picked Harry Hoodini and we have been reading the who was book together. It’s really an interesting read for adults too.
