Lately, I’ve been reading lots of suspense thrillers.  The Woman in the Window goes down as one of my 2018 favorites!

We watched Rear Window a few days ago, and I can see how old movies like that lent an air of inspiration to The Woman in the Window.  Hitchcock would be proud of the way Anna’s story is told. The heavy story plot reminds me of an Edgar Allen Poe novel!   The daily log of Anna’s activity kept the pace moving, even as the days seemed to drift by in Anna’s drunken stupor. Clearly, she needed to keep her brain sharp, in spite the gallons of wine she consumed. The author did a great job of portraying the weight of debilitating mental illness for an otherwise healthy woman.

Told in 1st period, there are so many great Anna quips in this book. I loved her witty, dry humor. “I’m trapped in a police car, fondling my fat. This is a new low.” Such comments added a bit of comic relief to an otherwise stressful book. Additionally, Punch the cat was a welcome breath of fresh air in stagnant moments.

I was super tempted to skip ahead and sneak a peek of the ending, but restrained! The book felt too long by about 100 pages. Tedious movie references made me skim some pages, and sometimes the descriptions were just too much. Still, this goes down as one of my favorite reads of 2018. I’ve already recommended it to friends.
