Many thanks to MamatheFox for hosting the Sip Sip Hooray hop. It has been a while since I regularly participated in giveaway hops. To thank you for visiting Savings in Seconds, I am offering a $10 Amazon giveaway to one lucky reader.
After last summer’s pandemic, it has been such a relief and joy that life is somewhat back to normal. I’m still a homebody, though. My ideal days consist of puttering around my garden, reading, and taking naps. Utter perfection. I hope you are having a sweet summer, too!
Speaking of my garden, it’s been fun to try some new products and plants this year. My son requested some berries, so I planted strawberries in a Gardzen grow bag, my Garden Project vertical tower, and my new Greenstalk planter. If you’ve been wanting to try gardening, this is a great time to grab a Greenstalk. They are currently on sale through July 19.
Several people have asked me if it’s too late to plant vegetables this summer. You definitely have time! It’s important to choose the right variety of crops. You can get a head start by checking your local garden center for transplants that can be popped right into your containers or raised beds. You may even have time to plant from seed (which is what I prefer to do), again depending on the specific variety you select. Look for fast-growing vegetables that will give you a quick crop from seed to harvest — within approximately 60 days or less. I just placed an order for these seeds and will plant them as soon as they arrive:
- Apple Blossom Swiss Chard Baby Greens
- Avalanche Beets
- Provider bush beans
- Contender bush beans
- Tendersweet snap pea
- Cocozelle summer squash
- California Giants zinnia — redeemed reward points for these
- I already have seeds for lettuce, spinach, and bok choy to replant my salad containers.
You can also find Botanical Interests seed collections on Amazon.
If you already have plants growing in your garden, you’re in luck — this is the perfect opportunity to tuck in some new lettuce seedlings. They will appreciate the shelter under the larger established plants’ leaves. As you can see in the photo below, my lettuce grew much better when it was under the shadow of a squash leaf. As the larger plants fade, just gently clip them above the roots and let the greens grow on.
For those who don’t want to tackle an outdoor garden but still want some fresh greens, give microgreens a try! They’re super quick to grow — you can usually eat them within 10 days from seeding. You can even use “regular” seeds for microgreens.
My husband and I have been binge-watching Seinfeld starting with season 1. So much fun. On one of the scenes, the actors are standing outside of a produce market and the prices are posted on the windows. Lettuce for 33 cents? Strawberries for 77 cents a pound? Those prices might not be found at today’s stores, but you can definitely grow your own lettuce for 33 cents a pop!
Ready for the giveaway? One lucky reader will win a $10 Amazon gift card. The giveaway is open to WW readers ages 18+ who can receive an Amazon gift card via email (void where prohibited by law.) Enter on the form below. Good luck!
